A Plant Shop in Baltimore,
Organized by Origin
Every plant in this Black-owned shop is arranged by the region it comes from, so you leave knowing what your plant needs and the story it carries.
326 N Charles St, Baltimore · Wed 5 to 9 · Thu through Sat 11 to 9 · Sun and Mon 12 to 7
Where a plant comes from tells you how it lives
Walk the shop and you move through Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Australia, one region at a time.
Our founder, Quincy Goldsmith, spent years as a metallurgical engineer before he opened this shop, and the shelves show it. A snake plant carries the drought habits of arid West Africa. A monstera still expects the shade of a Central American canopy. Arrange them by origin and the science stands where you can see it.
It’s also cultural. Many of the most loved houseplants in American homes trace back to Africa, the Caribbean, and South America, and that story usually goes untold. We tell it every day, right on the shelf tags. You can read the story behind Stem & Vine or come hear it in person.
Shop the world, one shelf at a time
Each region has its own page with geography, care notes, and the plants you already know without knowing where they came from.
Africa
Home of the nearly indestructible snake plant, the dramatic fiddle-leaf fig, and the spiky dragon tree of Madagascar.
Asia
The largest and most populous continent, and the homeland of favorites that fill windowsills across Baltimore.
The Americas
Rain forests that gave us the monstera, the philodendron, and a thousand kinds of peperomia.
Australia
An isolated continent full of plants found nowhere else, from the umbrella tree to the weeping fig.
Every plant here knows where it comes from.
By the time you leave, so will you.
Pick a plant you can actually keep alive
Tell us about your light, your schedule, and your track record. We'll point you to a plant that forgives.
Plenty of people walk in convinced they have a black thumb. Usually they just had the wrong plant for their window. Our selection runs from beginner-friendly workhorses to plants for collectors, and every one comes with honest guidance about what it needs from you.
- Beginner-friendly picks that tolerate low light and missed waterings
- Care advice grounded in each plant's native region
- Written guides to take home, region by region
When questions come up later, our plant care guides organized by continent cover the same ground we walk you through in the shop.
A shop you experience, in person
Founder Quincy Goldsmith calls it experiential retail, and it only works one way: you have to be here.
This is a shop built for lingering. Browse the Garden at the front, sit with a glass from our wine bar a few steps away, look at original art on the walls, and talk plants with people who love them. Buying a plant here is how a good visit ends.
A plant is a living thing you should meet before you take it home. Stand in front of it, size it up against the corner you have in mind, and ask anything while somebody who knows the plant is standing right there. It goes home in the hands of the person who picked it.

Questions new plant parents ask us
Can I buy plants from Stem & Vine online?
No. We’re an in-person shop by design. Come in, see the plants in real light, and leave with the one that fits your home and your schedule. Buying for somebody else? Gift cards work on plants too.
I have never kept a plant alive. Where do I start?
Start with a forgiving one. Snake plants and dragon trees handle low light and missed waterings, and we'll match you to one that fits the light and attention you can honestly give it. Our care guides by continent back you up at home.
Why are the plants organized by region of origin?
Because where a plant comes from tells you how to care for it. A plant adapted to the dry heat of the Sahara needs very different care from one that grew up in a humid rain forest. The regions also carry the cultural stories behind the plants, and telling those stories is the point of the shop.
What are your hours?
Sunday and Monday 12 to 7, Wednesday 5 to 9, and Thursday through Saturday 11 to 9. We’re closed Tuesday. Find us at 326 N Charles St in downtown Baltimore.
